Compulsory Registration Extended - 02.11.04
Since 1 November companies engaged in the tourism business have to be registered with the Namibia Tourism Board (NTB). This is stipulated by the NTB law passed in 2000. An amendment came into force a few months ago. The aim with the mandatory registration is to set standards for tourism facilities and services and to monitor compliance – in the interest of the tourists as well as Namibia’s travel sector. Previously only accommodation establishments were obliged to register with the tourism authorities. Other businesses were entered into the general register of companies and it was up to them to join an association within their own sector.
Since November accommodation establishments are also required to pay a Tourism Levy. The levy is primarily used for financing the NTB's marketing efforts and amounts to 2 percent of the price charged for accommodation including breakfast or 1 percent of the price charged for accommodation including activities. The accommodation facilities of the Gondwana Desert Collection are absorbing the levy without passing the extra cost on by raising the prices.
