On new wings to Namibia - 02.12.05
The new Airbus A 340-300 touched down at Hosea Kutako International Airport east of Windhoek for the first time yesterday. The aircraft, leased from Avequis of France, replaces one of the two McDonnell-Douglas 11 (leased from Swiss Air) which have been flying the long-haul routes to London and Frankfurt so far. The Airbus seats 278 passengers and is seen as very comfortable and highly economical.

Namibia’s national carrier hopes that compared to the MD 11 the A 340-300 will reduce the cost per seat by 15 percent. The introduction of the Airbus is part of the strategy to take the airline out of its debt. The State of Namibia has to subsidise Air Namibia to the tune of N$ 160 million this year alone.
