Parks report Proliferation - 05.07.07
The latest game counts have established healthy increases for both parks. Gondwana Namib Park currently has 450 springbok and 180 Oryx antelope; Gondwana Kalahari Park has no less than 2,200 and 280 respectively. But the numbers of steenbok (Namib 55, Kalahari 240) and ostrich (Namib 40, Kalahari 140) have also developed well. Compared to the time when these areas were taken over two and a half years ago, all species have grown in numbers in both parks.
Migration and offspring are the main reason for the increase in Gondwana Namib Park; in Gondwana Kalahari Park it is offspring and additional purchasing (Oryx). The 23 Burchell’s zebra which were released in Gondwana Kalahari Park in August 2006 are doing fine and already have two foals in their ranks.
Game counts are conducted regularly. The aim of the count is to obtain reliable data on populations in the park area, their distribution and the development of figures from year to year. This is a prerequisite for sustainable game management. Rain is not only sparse in this arid region, but there are also significant fluctuations in annual quantities; this affects the condition of grazing, of course. Game management implies that strict attention is being paid to not exceeding the carrying capacity of the land.
