Learning the Ropes during an Internship - 20.08.04
Six second-year students from the Helmut Bleks Foundation, Baumgartsbrunn (west of Windhoek), were introduced to the day-to-day routine at the accommodation establishments of Gondwana Cañon Park. They were divided between the Cañon Roadhouse, Cañon Village and Cañon Lodge. All trainees went through a rigorous schedule, ranging from housekeeping to preparation work in the kitchen.
Special emphasis was put on the bakery, which supplies fresh bread and patisserie delicacies daily. The next stop was the restaurant where they were taught about international standards and service etiquette. They also learnt how to run a bar and how to sell and serve drinks. Lastly, it was to the reception area where the trainees practised to check in guests and attend to their needs. In the Self-Sufficiency Centre, one of the young women learnt new techniques and applied her own skills in the vegetable garden and in animal husbandry.
For years Gondwana has encouraged aspiring young Namibians to come and complete their in-service training in the various spheres within the company. The interaction between the existing staff and the newcomers proves to be highly beneficial for all involved and as a spin-off tends to produce some brilliant new ideas.
Aina Ndakondja from Okahao is on a private apprenticeship to help her with her career choice.
