Big Cats sighted at the Canyon - 26.03.07
The 50 Burchell's zebra, which were released in the parks in the Kalahari and at the Fish River Canyon in equal numbers last July, are now raising foals. Two foals were spotted in Gondwana Kalahari Park northeast of Mariental; another one was found in Gondwana Cañon Park at the Fish River Canyon, but it had lost its mother and died shortly afterwards. Numerous young springbok and quite a few young Oryx antelope can be seen in all four parks.

In addition, Gondwana Cañon Park is pleased about the appearance of large feline predators. Staffers continue to find tracks of a fully grown cheetah since January. Cheetahs were persecuted and drastically decimated by small livestock farmers in southern Namibia for decades. Last weekend a springbok was killed by a leopard – in the immediate vicinity of Cañon Lodge. These big cats attack human beings only if they feel cornered or if they see their cubs in danger.
